- UV Skinz® fabric is a blend of high quality, quick-drying nylon and spandex and guaranteed by the Australian Radiation Laboratory to be at least UPF 50+. The seams are made of stretch thread and sewn in a ‘flat-locking’ stitch to ensure maximum durability and smoothness, especially important in decreasing any irritation under the armpits and side seams.
- UV Skinz® is designed primarily as swimwear but the style of the garments allow them to double as sports and playwear for all ages.
- Every Kid‘s UV Skinz® inside tag is printed right on the material, to eliminate irritation to the skin, and reads: “UV Skinz - My Name Is: _______________” which allows for the parent to write their child’s name in permanent marker so it doesn’t get confused with anyone else’s shirt.
- Each Kid’s UV Skinz® also comes with a rubber bracelet in a compliment color to the shirt, a current trend that every child will beg to have!
Rhonda Sparks-Farwell didn’t realize her husband would die from what started as a seemingly harmless mole. When he told her he had skin cancer, she assumed doctors could just remove the blemish. After they did, the family went about their lives as they did before. “We were just so ignorant to the causes of skin cancer and how deadly it can be.” At age 32, and just three days after the tragic September 11th incident, Darren Farwell died of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Since then, Sparks-Farwell has turned the tragedy into a cause. She began a company called UV Skinz, which main purpose is to make shirts that protect children’s skin from the UV rays. Sparks-Farwell is determined to raise awareness about the potential danger’s of the sun and get as many kid’s covered as possible. Sparks-Farwell first had the idea after buying for her three boys shirts in Hawaii that surfers wear to protect themselves from rash. At that time, the shirts weren’t marketed as sun protection. “It was just a way for my kids not to be slathered in sunscreen every two to three hours,” she said. When they returned, people asked about the shirts and how to get them, but Sparks-Farwell discovered they were difficult to find. She wanted to make the shirts available at a cost-effective price so that ALL families could afford them. “My boys feel naked without them,” she said. “It’s just part of their bodies.” Rhonda truly feels that it’s a ‘no-brainer’ to have a staple of UV Skinz swimshirts in every household as they help save time and lives. (Not to mention they cost about as much as a good bottle of sunscreen and don’t have the harsh chemicals involved.)
UV Skinz are swimshirts designed for children to wear in and out of the water. They come in long and short sleeve styles, and in a variety of color combinations. Their sporty look and cool logo make them popular among a wide age range. The spandex/nylon shirts have a tight weave that blocks out 98% of the sun’s harmful rays. This gives them a UPF 50+ rating, the highest protective rating available. The shirts are comfortable and dry quickly. Sunscreen (which should be applied thirty minutes prior to sun exposure) is then only needed on the face, hands and legs.
